Daniel Schorr Lives On As An Icon for Integrity

July 23, 2010 – 11:38 am

Daniel Schorr died today. I missed him immediately.

His professional life had as a foundation the courage of integrity.

His insights, opinions and reports came with the gravitas of fearlessness.

His conversations with Scott Simon on Saturday Edition on NPR were one of the news analysis highlights of the week.

As the news media searches for a business model that honors and supports impartial journalism this last icon of the Morrow era will be sorely missed.

Fed By My Father

June 20, 2010 – 12:23 pm

Memories of father often focus on mealtime. In Meals Can Share More Than Food I told Oregonian readers how mealtime bound our family. Meals were the consistent family activity and probably explain my fascination with food.

Most of memories Dad fall into one of two categories; he was at work or it was time for dinner.

When it came to work, I can say this for sure, my father worked harder than I ever have. Most of my youth, he worked seven days a week usually 10 hours per day or more.

He worked with a passion for the work itself. A post card he once sent says, “If your work is work you’re in the wrong kind of work”. He lived that ethic.

He also saw it as a responsibility. He provided. That’s what a returned WWII infantryman did. He put a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs and he paid for food on the table.

Dad really liked Mom’s cooking. Her kitchen expertise was something he bragged about to others. His business kept him often on the road and as those who have ever traveled for weeks at a time know, restaurant food gets tiring.

Mom hungered to dine out, experience the deft hands of professional chefs or, better yet, luxuriate in the joy of being served. She could never understand why he didn’t want to go out.

Why would he want to eat at another restaurant when he could get tasty healthy meals served with creative flair right in his own home? No, eating meals at home made more sense and catered to greater needs. When we pushed away from the table, the cycle was complete. He had done his duty.

So, today, as I break bread, I will remember my dad at the head of the table as we gathered to become family, to share the bounty he provided and to bond for an hour in that place we called home.

Happy Father’s Day

Why Another Food Blog?

June 19, 2010 – 12:18 pm

Hi, my name is Tom, also known as the Nutrition Magician®.

Though my website has been up since 1997 this is my first attempt at joining the interactive web universe.

Why now? Why another food blog?

Because there are things that are not being said that need to be said about food, mealtimes and the role of nutrition in all aspects of our daily lives.

Over the past two decades I have had the privlidge of speaking on all aspects of food and food service to tens of thousands of people. At conventions, seminars, fairs, festivals, and over 600 schools one thing has been consistent. After the event people want to talk with me about their personal situation, insight or travail. There is never enough time to interact or give the detailed answers that would serve best.

The queries fall into many categories yet often have a familiar theme. How do I do it?

As I embark on this new part of the Nutrition Magician® experience I will try to provide the how, expand on the why and comment on the what the hell.

Let me know what you think.

I look forward to the adventure.
